When it comes to skincare, sunscreen is one of the most powerful tools we have to protect our skin. Yet, despite being a daily essential, there are many misconceptions surrounding its use. From thinking sunscreen is only for summer to believing higher SPF means all-day protection, myths often stop people from using sunscreen effectively. Let’s clear the air and separate myths from facts so you can keep your skin safe and healthy.
Myth 1: Sunscreen is only needed on sunny days
Fact: UV rays can penetrate through clouds, glass, and even windows. Up to 80% of UV rays reach your skin on cloudy days. That’s why dermatologists recommend daily use, regardless of the weather.
Myth 2: Darker skin tones don’t need sunscreen
Fact: While melanin does offer some natural protection, people with darker skin are still at risk of sun damage, premature aging, and skin cancer. Sunscreen is for everyone, no matter the skin tone.
Myth 3: SPF 100 provides complete protection
Fact: No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays. SPF 30 blocks about 97%, SPF 50 about 98%, and SPF 100 about 99%. Higher SPF can give more margin for error, but reapplication every 2 hours is still essential.
Myth 4: Makeup with SPF is enough
Fact: Most makeup with SPF doesn’t provide sufficient coverage or the amount needed for full protection. Think of SPF makeup as an extra layer, not your main defense. Always apply a dedicated sunscreen underneath.
Myth 5: You don’t need sunscreen indoors
Fact: UV rays, especially UVA, can pass through windows and contribute to premature aging. If you spend long hours near windows or screens, sunscreen is still a must.
Myth 6: Sunscreen causes vitamin D deficiency
Fact: Sunscreen reduces UV penetration, but it doesn’t block all rays. Most people still get enough vitamin D from incidental sun exposure. Plus, vitamin D can also be obtained from diet and supplements without risking skin damage.
Myth 7: Waterproof sunscreen lasts all day
Fact: “Water-resistant” doesn’t mean “waterproof.” Sunscreen loses effectiveness after swimming, sweating, or towel-drying. Always reapply every 2 hours or after water exposure.
Sunscreen is not just a summer product—it’s a year-round necessity. It helps protect against skin cancer, sunburn, and premature aging. To get the best protection:
