Low Testosterone & Fitness Goals

Author : Dr. Sheikh Jeelani   / BNYS | FTECH

Exercising regularly plays a major role in both physical and mental health. Unfortunately, many people who go to the gym tend to neglect cardio-endurance exercise and only focus on resistance training, or vice-versa.We like to help our patients achieve the best possible results with the overarching goal being total wellbeing. With this in mind, not only are we providing our patients with treatments such as testosterone replacement therapy, extensive options for erectile dysfunction, and infertility treatment, but we also work with our patients to help them achieve their fitness goals.

The symptoms of low testosterone are not only here to restore their energy and libido, but usually have some goal related to fitness and physique. We strive to engage and educate our patients with informative tests and conversations about their current fitness status to work towards their future goals. By doing this, we hope to complement our treatment and produce a wholistic approach to health that can’t be found elsewhere.

One test InBody570 body composition test. The main aim is to identify skeletal muscle mass, fat percentage/distribution throughout the body, and water composition – it only takes a couple of minutes on a scale! This can be especially helpful for men on testosterone replacement therapy. Along with that, there are some more tests - VO2, Spirometry, and RMR (resting metabolic rate) testing, all of which help identify areas of strengths and weaknesses during rest and exercise. These following tests are relatively simple, don’t take long, and can help identify ways to improve your workouts, such as balancing out your cardio-to-resistance training ratio:

VO2 – A representation of how much oxygen your body uses during exercise at a maximum effort. In other words, how much oxygen your heart can pump and how much of that oxygen your skeletal muscles can use.

RMR – A test that measures how many calories you burn at rest.

Spirometry – A test used to assess your lung capacity and function by measuring how much air you inhale, how much you exhale and how quickly you exhale.

Even if you are not currently exercising, these tests will provide a baseline reading, necessary to creating a personalized plan for reaching target health goals. Together we can set small goals and follow up appointments to track progress and adjust as needed. With the RMR test, we can even find out if the calories you burn throughout the day and during exercise are from carbohydrates, fat, or protein in the body. This information is key when creating a diet plan in accordance with your exercise routine. We encourage pairing this with the expertise of our registered dietician to set realistic and achievable goals for fitness, weight loss, and dietary adjustments.
